Parliament Panel Invites Suggestions on National Institute of Design Bill

The Committee advised extending identical statutory status and degree-granting powers to these new institutes.
  • Integration with Manufacturing Zones: The panel suggested establishing design innovation hubs within National Investment and Manufacturing Zones (NIMZ) to connect academic research directly with industrial manufacturing.
  • Faculty Development and Research Grants: The Committee highlighted the urgent need to expand faculty development programs and provide dedicated research funding to retain top design talent within the country.
  • Standardized Infrastructure and Funding: The report emphasized establishing stable statutory funding allocations to guarantee that regional design campuses maintain world-class laboratories and rapid prototyping facilities.

Enactment of the National Institute of Design Act

Following the Parliamentary review and stakeholder consultations, Parliament passed the legislation as the National Institute of Design Act, 2014, which entered into force on September 16, 2014. Subsequent legislative amendments in 2019 formally incorporated the new regional campuses at Amaravati, Bhopal, Jorhat, and Kurukshetra as institutions of national importance under a unified statutory framework.

This statutory structure provided institutional autonomy while establishing uniform standards of academic governance, curriculum quality, and professional certification across all national design campuses.
