Video Enhancement

Forensic Video Analysis and Video Enhancement services help upgrade video quality and carry lucidity to sound/video components. Video enhancement may incorporate sharpening, brightening, slowing down, or speeding up surveillance video footage to make details easier for viewing. Scenes or parts of scenes can be enlarged, as well as still images captured for individual display. Those pictures can then be able to be printed onto small boards for judge conveyance, or for introduction onto flat-panel monitors in the courtroom. Side-by-side displays may also be used to illustrate image comparisons.

The initial step is the receipt of evidence and preservation of the chain of evidence, which is also known as preserving the chain of custody. After copying the original evidence to our servers, the following step is to create a copy of the original video evidence in a format suitable for analysis and enhancement. Doing so secures the original evidence while at the same time permits a new version to be added to our software for clarification and editing during analysis.

Assessment and analysis of video

During assessment and analysis of video evidence, a video forensic expert will be looking for many different things, such as:
  • Size and resolution of the video
  • Evidence of pressure or transformation of the video (from original video format)
  • Evidence of editing or adulteration
  • Determination of video outline rate, codec, and other significant details
  • Analysis of Metadata or Exif Data
Forensic experts will also make determinations with respect to the kind of forensic video clarification which may be useful and possible for the case.

Elements that may affect the success of enhancements include:

  • Type of video recording equipment used

The enhanced video is not only high quality, but is able to be played on any brand of devices — for example - any computer, tablet, or cell phone.

Writing a report and testifying in court or Deposition

When improvements have been finished for the case, it is sometimes vital for a video forensic expert to write a detailed forensic report. This report is intended to be admitted into evidence, along with the enhanced video, as a written record of video analysis and enhancement steps taken by the expert on both the original evidence as well as the improved videos created for which the expert may be called to testify in a deposition or trial. The amount and kind of information included in the forensic report are customized to the specifics of the evidence as well as what is important to each particular case. It also intended to give a summary of the testimony and opinions the expert would give in court. Forensic experts are sometimes called upon to testify in affidavits or court as to many details of the evidence. Some of the time the video expert will testify regarding the observations and conclusions made with respect to the evidence. Sometimes the expert will be called to testify regarding the method and tools used to improve videos or audio created for the case. The forensic expert’s testimony can be to disprove the findings of other forensic experts, or it tends to be exclusive with respect to explaining the enhancements. Whatever the circumstances, experts should be prepared to explain any and all aspects of the evidence for the judge.
